KUALA LUMPUR:
An opposition MP was escorted out of the Dewan Rakyat to receive medical attention today after he appeared to have difficulty in breathing while speaking.

Fathul Huzir Ayob (PN-Gerik) had been taking part in the debate on the royal address but struggled to continue.

He loosened his shirt while speaking about the plight of the people in his constituency, despite the wealth of natural resources such as timber, tin and gold.

The deputy speaker, Ramli Nor, interjected to ask Fathul if he was well enough to continue or if he was in need of medical attention. “If (the member for) Gerik is not feeling well, he can go to our clinic,” Ramli said.

Fathul apologised, saying he was “emotional”. He said he wanted to continue his speech but struggled to speak.

Other MPs urged the deputy speaker to call for medical assistance, after which Fathul ended his speech and was escorted out.

Arau MP Shahidan Kassim later visited Fathul Huzir at the Parliament clinic and said he was in good condition and just needed rest.
