Without addressing directly social media claims of a leak, LHDN said in a brief statement that all taxpayer data on its servers was protected by a certified security system.
“We take this issue seriously and have made it our top priority to instill greater confidence among taxpayers in LHDN’s services,” it said, adding that it would continue to improve services and take proactive measures to tackle the issue.
Earlier today, Malaysiakini reported complaints by social media users that taxpayers’ personal information could easily be accessed by anyone through LHDN’s MyTax website.
The portal quoted IT experts as claiming that only the MyKad number of a taxpayer to access information such as home address, telephone number and bank account number.
Malaysiakini also reported that the MyTax website had been down since afternoon “but it could not be ascertained if it had to do with the data leakage issue”.
Checks at 4.30pm found that the site was back online, with the loophole seemingly plugged, it said.
It was also learned that the page administrator had encrypted personal data on the website and the information was no longer accessible to the public, it reported.
