SHAH ALAM:
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has challenged critics to explain how exactly his government had betrayed and denied the rights of Malays since taking power.

Anwar said there was little point in taunting his government with accusations of being “traitors” and “cruel”.

“Since we have been in power, give us one example where we have betrayed the Malays, denied their rights and betrayed Islam. There is none. It’s just propaganda,” he declared.

Anwar, who is PKR president, was making his winding-up speech at PKR’s special national congress today.

He asked critics of his government to provide examples and suggestions for how the government could improve.

“Give us new suggestions to improve Islamic shariah, the position of the Malays and etc, and I will accept them with an open heart,” he said.

Anwar reiterated his promise not to protect any minister, MP or assemblyman if they are found to be involved in corruption.

“It’s not my job to protect them, including those who are from PKR themselves,” he said.

Responding to questions about why recent corruption charges hadn’t been laid earlier, in an apparent reference to cases being brought against prominent Bersatu leaders like Muhyiddin Yassin, he explained that on becoming prime minister he had not been given a mandate to charge anyone he wished.

“As I have said, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, the attorney-general and the judiciary must go back to being a free institution with integrity,” he said.
