Many have complained about the exorbitant airfares to East Malaysia, especially during the school holidays.

KUALA LUMPUR:
A Sabah MP has called on the government to introduce a student discount card for East Malaysians in Peninsular Malaysia to help cushion the exorbitant airfares.

The discount card should be valid for two trips a year either to Sabah or Sarawak from West Malaysia or vice versa, Isnaraissah Munirah Majilis (Warisan-Kota Belud) said when debating the 2023 budget.

Isnaraissah had, prior to this, touched on the exorbitant airfares to East Malaysia during the recent school holidays, adding that a one-way trip cost close to RM1,000.

“School holidays shouldn’t be a reason for airlines to increase the price of tickets.”

Isnaraissah also wanted an update on the government’s intention to reclaim control of airspace over southern Johor, which has been managed by Singapore since 1974.

In 2019, then transport minister Loke Siew Fook had announced that the government would seek to reclaim its airspace in phases between 2019 and 2023.

“This is a factor behind the increased airfares between East and West Malaysia,” Isnaraissah said.
