In a statement today, SPAN said the former Klang MP’s reappointment was effective from March 20.
Santiago previously held the post from November 2018 to April 2020 when Pakatan Harapan was in government.
SPAN is an independent regulatory body for water supply and sewerage services in the peninsula as well as Labuan.
Santiago’s appointment is effective until 2025.
When contacted, he told FMT that he was grateful for the opportunity.
He said climate change has had a major impact on water and this would lead to several challenging years ahead.
“It will not only be challenging for operators but consumers as well. We will see extreme weather patterns due to climate change,” he said.
When asked what his goals would be as the chairman, Santiago said he would need to first consult natural resources, environment and climate change minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.
“I need to get his advice first on the direction of the industry, in view of the many challenges we are going to face, including climate change and high level of pollution in our rivers.”
