PUTRAJAYA:
Newly appointed immigration director-general Ruslin Jusoh says he will be focusing on addressing integrity issues among his staff to overcome abuse of power in the department.

Ruslin also reminded officers, especially those in the enforcement division, to adhere to the rules and laws.

“It would not be fair for me to point fingers at all the immigration officers when it is just a fraction of them whom I consider ‘naughty’.

“But if there is a clear act of refusal to obey orders, I will not hesitate to take stern action not only against the rank and file but also the top management,” Ruslin, who was appointed on March 22, said at a press conference.

He said the department was giving its full cooperation to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in its investigation into immigration enforcement officers suspected of being involved in the smuggling of foreign migrants from the Philippines.

He said the department would not compromise if the officers were found guilty.

“We will take stern action including dismissal if they are found guilty after going through due process,” he said.

The media had earlier reported that five immigration officers were among nine people remanded for six days to assist in the investigation of a syndicate to smuggle illegal immigrants through the Tawau Airport in Sabah.

The officers were alleged to have accepted bribes of between RM100 and RM3,000 for every illegal immigrant smuggled in by the syndicate as an inducement to release them using someone else’s MyKad.
