Another dog was found at the nearby Mutiara View condominium last Thursday, bringing the total number of stray dogs poisoned to 30.

GEORGE TOWN:
An animal welfare group is offering a RM5,000 reward to anyone with information that leads to the arrest of those responsible for poisoning stray dogs in Taman Island Glades here.

Choong Koon Yean, the manager of the Penang chapter of International Aid for the Protection and Welfare of Animals (IAPWA) said the cash was from one of its supporters, who wished to remain anonymous.

She also said the group is working closely with the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) to solve the case.

Those with information on the case may contact the council at 04-2637000 or WhatsApp at 016-2004082.

“Their identity and the information received will be kept private and confidential,” she told FMT when contacted.

“The city council will send the information to the relevant authority, which is the department of veterinary services (DVS) (for further action).”

One more carcass found

Meanwhile, a resident of Taman Island Glades, Anna Chim, 67, told FMT that another dog carcass was found at the nearby Mutiara View condominium last Thursday.

With this discovery, the total number of stray dogs which had been poisoned in the area now stood at 30.

She was alerted by her friend, who is a resident at the condominium, about the carcass.

The dog was found with its mouth ajar and stomach bloated, just like the other 29 dogs that were found dead previously.

The carcass was sent to DVS on the same day for post-mortem.

The animal lover, who lost four of her own rescued dogs to poisoning, said that she has been doing her part in locating the culprit by distributing the flyer on the RM5,000 reward around her neighbourhood.

“Hopefully we will get the person (responsible for the killings). We also need more CCTVs to be up as soon as possible (around the neighbourhood) since only one has been installed since the city council’s visit last week.

“Otherwise, more (stray animals) will end up dead by the time the cameras are installed,” Chim added.

Last week, the council said that it had identified strategic points around the neighbourhood where CCTV cameras would be installed in order to detect those responsible should something similar happen in the future.

The authorities had also told the residents that their hands were tied unless there is video or eyewitness evidence of the killings.
