PETALING JAYA:
A budding special effects video creator from Malaysia has won a monthly contest in the US hosted by popular video maker Zach King.

Sofyank, whose real name is Soffian Abdullah, 26, beat two others, from Britain and the Netherlands, in a challenge requiring contestants to come up with videos with unique special effects within 72 hours.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and ministers were among those who congratulated Soffian.

Soffian had been invited by King to take part in the Ultimate VFX Challenge, a monthly contest hosted by King in Los Angeles.

King has popularised the art of “magic” videos, in which video editing and special effects are used to make objects seem to appear or disappear out of thin air.

The contest requires three of King’s fans to go through a series of arduous challenges. The winners join King to work on a video to be posted on his social media account which has over 100 million subscribers.

In his winning video, Soffian turned a face mirror and an apple into a cake, a visual trickery that impressed judges, which included Mythbusters host Adam Savage, a renowned special effects maker himself.

An elated Soffian thanked King, his personal idol and inspiration to those trying to come up with creative videos.

“Meeting Zach and working alongside him to create videos and receive expert advice was truly a dream come true. Thank you again for this life-changing experience,” he said in a comment on YouTube.

Soffian had recently made a special effects video with Hollywood A-lister Paul Rudd in promoting his latest movie, “Ant-Man and the Wasp” in February.
