Mas Ermieyati Samsuddin and Che Alias Hamid won the Masjid Tanah and Kemaman parliamentary seats, respectively, on a Perikatan Nasional ticket.

PUTRAJAYA:
Two election petitions challenging the results of the Masjid Tanah and Kemaman parliamentary seats in the last general election (GE15) over claims of bribery will go for full trials.

The Masjid Tanah seat was won by Mas Ermieyati Samsuddin, while the Kemaman seat was won by Che Alias Hamid.

Both are from Perikatan Nasional.

A Federal Court bench led by Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat today held that there are issues that need to be examined in a full hearing.

Barisan Nasional’s Abdul Hakim Abdul Wahid, who lost to Mas Ermieyati, had sought to challenge her victory, claiming that there were elements of bribery during the election campaign which affected the election results.

Meanwhile, Kemaman voter Wan Hisham Wan Abdul Hamid filed the election petition against Che Alias, alleging that the MP or his agents had committed bribery.

Earlier this year, the election courts in Melaka and Terengganu struck out their petitions against Mas Ermieyati and Che Alias on grounds that they were defective.

Following this, Abdul Hakim and Hisham filed appeals to reinstate the petitions.

The Federal Court fixed case managements for Masjid Tanah on May 5, and Kemaman on May 8.

Tengku Maimun said both election petitions would be heard before new election judges.

Abdul Hakim and Hisham were represented by lawyer Hafarizam Harun. Lawyers Yusfarizal Yusoff and Wan Rohimi Wan Daud appeared for Mas Ermieyati and Che Alias, respectively.

Hafarizam told reporters the Federal Court would also hear appeals on two election petitions for the Putrajaya and Gua Musang parliamentary seats on June 19.

Both petitions were struck out by the election courts in Kuala Lumpur and Kota Bharu in February and March.

Hafarizam also said the Kuala Terengganu election court would rule on June 26 over BN’s bid to unseat Marang MP Hadi Awang.
