PETALING JAYA:
Former housing and local government minister Reezal Merican Naina Merican has been appointed chairman of the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) effective immediately.

The agency confirmed the former Kepala Batas MP’s appointment in a Facebook post today.

Matrade is a government agency under the investment, trade and industry ministry, and is tasked with executing trade promotion initiatives for the country.

Reezal Merican joins a list of a number of politicians to be appointed to government agencies under the current administration.

In March, Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki was appointed Mara chairman and PKR’s Balik Pulau MP, Bakhtiar Wan Chik, was appointed chairman of MyCreative Ventures Sdn Bhd. The reappointment of former Machang MP Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub as Felcra chairman was also confirmed that month.

Netizens and civic groups had said the political appointments were inconsistent with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s push for reforms and good governance practices.
