KUALA LUMPUR:
Bersatu has lodged a police report seeking to “clear Hamzah Zainudin’s name” after the opposition leader was named in the charge sheet of a RM15 million corruption case involving a businessman.

Hamzah’s special officer, Ahmad Ikhwan Fadhli, said they also wanted the police to investigate if the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) was “forced” to tarnish Hamzah’s reputation by mentioning him in the charge sheet.

Meanwhile, Bersatu Youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal said more police reports will be lodged nationwide over the matter.

He claimed the whole issue was “political assassination” aimed at Bersatu and Hamzah, and questioned why MACC only took the former home minister’s statement after the businessman had been charged in court.

On Wednesday, businessman Sim Choo Thiam was charged with demanding RM15 million from another businessman, Hep Kim Hong, some time in June 2021.

According to the charge, the sum was meant as an inducement for Hamzah to assist Hep’s company, Asia Coding Sdn Bhd, to secure projects from his ministry.

Sim was also slapped with three other charges of receiving RM15 million to secure projects from the home ministry, to which he pleaded not guilty. Hamzah’s name was also mentioned in the other three charges.

In response, Hamzah said it seemed “certain people and businessmen” were pressured into “pointing their finger” at him, and claimed that his name was being dragged into matters that did not involve him.

However, MACC said its investigations were not aimed at exerting pressure on anyone, maintaining that it was an independent, transparent and professional agency.
