PETALING JAYA:
Police arrested three men in connection with a carjacking in Kepala Batas, Penang.

Seberang Perai Utara police chief Asri Shafie said the trio, aged 27 to 49, were arrested separately in Seberang Jaya, Butterworth and Kuala Kangsar yesterday, Bernama reported.

Asri said in the 7.45am incident, a Perodua Axia stopped at a traffic light when three men suddenly dragged the driver out of the vehicle and drove it away.

The carjacking was caught on video and the clip went viral.

“Investigations found that the driver’s mother had not paid back RM100,000 she had borrowed from a man in 2020,” Asri was quoted as saying.

He also said the woman had agreed to surrender her car if she failed to pay the debt and that the creditor had hired a company to repossess the car.

He said the three suspects were under the influence of drugs when they were arrested, while police officers have managed to recover the car.

Asri added that the case is being investigated for suspected gang robbery.
