Shaid, who quit Pejuang alongside Dr Mahathir Mohamad last February, said he is confident he could provide fierce competition against Barisan Nasional candidate Jahaya Ibrahim.
“The majority of Jeram’s residents have expressed their support for me to contest under PN’s ticket, so it is up to the coalition’s top leadership (to decide).
“If they (PN) want to win, they should give me the chance to contest the seat,” he told FMT.
In the 2018 general election, Shaid won the Jeram seat on a Bersatu ticket with a majority of 1,191 votes. However, he quit Bersatu in August 2020 and joined the Mahathir-led party Pejuang.
Shaid said PN is expected to field “outsider” Harrison Hassan for the Jeram seat, a decision he claims does not sit well with voters.
He said that based on the results of the last general election, Pakatan Harapan and BN are expected to be in the lead for the seat.
“So, it won’t be easy for PN to win. This is why the incumbent should be given the opportunity to contest and give BN’s candidate a good challenge,” he said.
