PETALING JAYA:
Amanah has announced its candidates for the upcoming by-elections in the Pulai parliamentary seat and Simpang Jeram state seat in Johor.

Former Johor state assembly speaker Suhaizan Kaiat will stand in Pulai, while Nazri Abdul Rahman is contesting in Simpang Jeram.

The seats were previously held by the late Salahuddin Ayub, who was Amanah deputy president and the domestic trade and cost of living minister. He died on July 23 after suffering a brain haemorrhage. He was 61.

Suhaizan, 50, had previously served as Salahuddin’s political secretary.

In a statement, Amanah said by convention, three names are required for the candidate selection committee to choose from. However, in Suhaizan’s case, there was no need for any other name to be shortlisted.

The party added that he was also the grassroots’ preferred candidate for the Pulai seat.

Suhaizan is a former lecturer at the faculty of computer science and information systems at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia.

He started his political career as a student activist before becoming a PAS Youth leader and one of the co-founders of Amanah in 2015. He was appointed speaker of the Johor assembly in 2018, a post he held until the state elections in 2022.

The Election Commission has set Aug 26 as the nomination day for the by-elections while the polling day falls on Sept 9. Early voting is set for Sept 5.
