PETALING JAYA:
Two cases of monkeypox have been reported in Malaysia, the health ministry has confirmed.

Health director-general Dr Radzi Abu Hassan said the first case was confirmed on July 26 involving a male foreigner who has been residing and working in Malaysia since April 2022.

The second case, confirmed on July 29, involves a Malaysian man who is a close contact of the first case.

“All close contacts for the first case were identified and closely monitored. Aside from the second case, no one else experienced any monkeypox symptoms,” he said in a statement today.

He said there are no other cases other than two patients so far, adding that the second patient did not have any close contacts.

The symptoms of monkeypox are fever, fatigue, headache and an eczema-like rash that begins on the face and then spreads to the hands and feet, followed by other parts of the body.

Patients may also experience body aches, back or joint pain, muscle spasms, and swollen lymph nodes.

Radzi said all healthcare workers are urged to be vigilant when encountering patients with blistering symptoms, especially among high-risk groups.

“Healthcare workers should obtain a history of close contacts of patients exhibiting monkeypox symptoms.

“For suspected monkeypox cases, blister swabs, oral swabs, and blood/serum samples can be sent to laboratories that provide monkeypox virus detection testing services,” he said.

He said there are 10 laboratories offering monkeypox detection testing services, comprising eight public and two private laboratories.

Suspected monkeypox cases should be reported to the nearest health office via the e-Notification system for further investigation and control measures to be carried out by the district health office, he said.
