
According to a report by Sinar Harian, the directive was made through the Government Gazette P.U (A) 2662 Film Censorship Act 2002 of the Film Censorship (Prohibition) Order 2023, dated Aug 21 and signed by home minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.
Previously screened via online streaming platforms, the film was widely panned and criticised by the public for scenes containing content that went against Islamic teachings and beliefs.
The Islamic development department had also said it found elements in the film that clearly went against the creed and way of life of Malaysian Muslims, who follow the Syafie school of thought.
The one hour and 44-minute film is an independent film directed by Khairi Anwar about the religious conflict faced by Muslim teenager Aisyah, who explores other religions, especially for answers to the question of life after death.
