KUALA LUMPUR:
Has Isham Jalil been sacked?

According to an Umno Supreme Council member, who spoke on condition of anonymity, its former information chief has been given the boot for openly criticising the party.

“He called for the president (Ahmad Zahid Hamidi) to step down, labelled Umno a DAP lackey, did not toe the party line and did not turn up for meetings,” the source said.

However, FMT is unable to verify if Isham was removed from the Supreme Council or sacked from the party.

Another Supreme Council member said that Isham had been removed from the council.

Isham was elected as an Umno Supreme Council member during the party’s elections in March.

While he was previously a strong supporter of Zahid, he has since been critical of the latter and the party’s cooperation with DAP, following the outcome of the six state elections in August.

He had even challenged Zahid to sack him in September over his criticism of Umno’s relationship with DAP and Pakatan Harapan.

Meanwhile, another Umno Supreme Council member, Razlan Rafii, said Isham seemed to be provoking the party into taking action against him.

“Whatever action is taken, it will be used for his political mileage because he has no grassroots followers,” he told reporters.

Earlier today, Zahid challenged Isham to attend tonight’s council meeting to air his grouses about Umno’s cooperation with DAP.

“I call on Isham to come to tonight’s Supreme Council meeting to voice his displeasure at (Umno’s) cooperation with DAP,” Zahid said.

“He hasn’t come to the last three meetings. Hopefully, he has the courage to attend tonight and express his opinion … that he opposed our collaboration with DAP when we formed the unity government with Pakatan Harapan.”

In response, Isham said he would not attend any of the council’s meetings as long as the party insisted on working with DAP.

Dismissing Zahid’s challenge, Isham instead reminded the Umno president that he was willing to debate with him on the matter “if he is brave”.

He also threw down the gauntlet to Zahid for them to resign together for the sake of the party.
