
He said there had been misunderstanding among the public about the low-value goods tax to be enforced from Jan 1.
“It only applies to products imported from overseas that are sold online in Malaysia. Products produced in the country are not affected. So, I hope this will clear up misunderstandings among the public,” said Fahmi, who is communications minister.
“From time to time we will carry out monitoring to make sure the people, especially sellers and buyers who carry out online transactions, really understand,” he told reporters.
He said the tax was aimed at enhancing the competitiveness of locally-produced goods.
The Customs department issued a notice last month that the 10% tax would be imposed from Jan 1.
