He said the increment would be the highest ever given to civil servants.
“The highest ever increase previously was 13% and this year I will announce an increment that is higher than that.
“We will implement the wage increase from December this year as I have promised,” Anwar said when officiating Labour Day celebrations at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre.
He said for civil servants on the lowest salary scale, their total income, including allowances, would thus increase to a minimum of RM2,000 per month from the current RM1,795 per month.
Anwar, who is also the finance minister, said the government has allocated more than RM10 billion for the salary adjustment, which will be applicable to all civil servants.
“(Civil servants) will also be monitored (to see if) they are lazy. If their work record is unsatisfactory, they will not be given the reward,” he said.
Anwar then called for the private sector to follow the government by providing good increments to its employees.
“Some companies make a lot of money but where does this huge profit come from? From (the workers’) productivity.
“Give some of it (to the workers). If the company makes hundreds of millions in profit, give a few hundred to the workers,” he said.
Meanwhile, Anwar said the Sabah and Sarawak governments had agreed to amend their states’ labour ordinances to be standardised with the Employment Act 1955 used in the peninsula.
He said the amendments would be tabled at the next Parliament sitting.
Meanwhile, unity government spokesman Fahmi Fadzil said details regarding the salary increase for civil servants would be announced during the tabling of the 2025 budget in October this year.
He said the hike in wages announced today clearly demonstrated the government’s commitment to civil servants.
