Artistes Association of Malaysia (Seniman) president Rozaidi Abdul Jamil, better known as Zed Zaidi, confirmed the matter.
“We (Seniman) were planning to visit him in HKL, but the hospital called to inform us that he had passed away,” he told Bernama.
Seniman secretary-general Hafiz Nafiah said the singer is expected to be buried at the Ukay Perdana Muslim cemetery near here tomorrow morning.
“He was hospitalised about three days ago due to lung complications,” he said.
In a Facebook post, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim expressed his condolences to Hail’s family.
“The works of this artiste from Penang will surely be remembered forever,” he said.
Hail started his career as a cultural dancer under the youth and sports ministry in the early 1970s and was known as the duet partner of famous songbird Uji Rashid.
The duo made waves with songs such as Hujan, Menunggu Nasi Minyak, Antara Matamu dan Mataku and the Hari Raya staple, Seloka Hari Raya.
Hail’s talent in the field of vocal arts was recognised by the renowned music composer Ahmad Nawab, leading to the creation of the popular song Wajah Kesayangan Hamba.
Among Hail’s films were Jiwa Remaja, Cinta Dan Lagu, Sesejuk Air Mata Ibu, Menanti Hari Esok, Ribut Barat and Anita Dunia Ajaib.
