Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said Sime Darby has developed the use of new plantation technology and machinery such as autonomous palm fruit picking robots and fertiliser application machinery.

KUALA LUMPUR:
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has called on Sime Darby Plantation Bhd to pioneer the government’s efforts to reduce dependency on foreign labour in the plantation sector.

In a Facebook post tonight, Anwar said the approach and technological advancement used by the plantation company should be emulated by smallholders in the future.

Anwar said he was shown the transformative potential of mechanisation, automation and digitalisation in the oil palm plantation sector during his working visit to Sime Darby Plantation’s site on Pulau Carey, Selangor.

“This includes the use of new plantation technology and machinery, like autonomous palm fruit picking robots and fertiliser application machinery developed by the company’s in-house expertise.

“Sime Darby Plantation is also pioneering advanced technology that is equipped with artificial intelligence and machine learning to reduce the sector’s reliance on manual labour.

“Thus, it will attract more young local talents to be involved in the oil palm industry,” he said.

Anwar also said he was proud after being told of technologies at the centre operated by local companies like eMooVit Technology Sdn Bhd, which specialises in autonomous vehicle technology and robotics.

Among its vehicles is the autonomous mechanical buffalo grabber, which is a driverless vehicle to pick oil palm.

The prime minister said another local start-up company had assisted in developing an autonomous fertiliser sprayer enhancing efficiency and accuracy.
