KUALA LUMPUR:
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission has opened two operations rooms for the public to channel information and lodge complaints regarding any corruption and abuse of power during the Sungai Bakap by-election campaign.

MACC said the operations rooms are at the Penang MACC headquarters and the Seberang Perai MACC branch office.

“These operations rooms will be open 24 hours until July 6. The public can also lodge any corruption and abuse of power complaints via email to prk2024_ppg@sprm.gov.my or by calling 04-2299262 extension 1107,” it said in a statement.

MACC reminded all candidates and political parties contesting in the by-election to refrain from engaging in activities that could violate election laws and regulations under the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 and the Election Offences Act 1954.

The Election Commission also announced today that it has established two election campaign enforcement teams to monitor the activities of candidates contesting in the by-election.

EC deputy chairman Azmi Sharom said all campaign methods and materials are permissible as long as they do not incite dissatisfaction, hostility, or involve racial or religious sensitivities, including 3R – race, religion and royalty – issues and do not violate the Election Offences Act 1954 (Act 5) and related laws.

“The EC hopes for a campaign that is conducted by both parties in a harmonious atmosphere and in compliance with existing laws and regulations,” Azmi said in a statement.

He also called on the candidates to comply with local authority by-laws when displaying and distributing materials containing photos, party emblems or symbols, as well as photos of coalition or component party leaders.

“There is no restriction on the inclusion of photos of political party logos or images of leaders from component political parties or alliances on election campaign materials,” he said.

The election campaign period starts today and will end at 11.59pm on July 5, the day before the by-election.

The July 6 polls will witness a straight fight between candidates from Pakatan Harapan and Perikatan Nasional.

PH is fielding the former director of Institut Aminuddin Baki in Kedah, Joohari Ariffin, to recapture the seat which was once a PKR stronghold.

PN is aiming to defend the seat after winning it in the Penang state election last August. It will be represented by former logistics executive and Nibong Tebal PAS deputy chief Abidin Ismail.

The Sungai Bakap state seat fell vacant following the death of its PAS incumbent, Nor Zamri Latiff, on May 24.

Early voting will be on July 2.
