Mirnawan praised the Olympic Council of Malaysia’s (OCM) initiative to provide new-themed official attire specifically for the Olympics, calling it a recognition and honour for national athletes and Olympians.
“The new-themed official attire for the Malaysian contingent to the Paris 2024 Olympics themed ‘gold’ is very unique and different from the official attire I have owned before. (It is) something different,” he said in a Facebook post with a photo of himself wearing the outfit.
“This new-themed attire, highlighting gold, will surely inject additional spirit into the Olympians to realise the dream of winning Malaysia’s first gold medal on the Olympic Games stage!”
Mirnawan also said he had proudly worn the official attire provided by the OCM for every multi-sport game.
Throughout his career, he competed in three Olympic Games (1992, 1996, 2000), three Asian Games (1990, 1994, 1998), one Commonwealth Games (1998), and five SEA Games (1993, 1995, 1997, 1999, 2001).
“I am immensely proud to have worn the official attire of the Malaysian contingent provided by OCM for each of these multi-sport games,” he said.
Mirnawan’s post comes in the wake of criticisms online regarding the newly unveiled gold-themed outfits with tiger stripe designs, with some describing them as “ugly” and “cheap-looking”.
The OCM had said that the attire would be used only for travel, with different kits planned for the opening ceremony and competition.
Youth and sports minister Hannah Yeoh distanced herself from the debacle on Monday by saying in an X posting that her ministry had no jurisdiction over the design and the responsibility was with the OCM.
