PETALING JAYA:
The board of a Tamil school in Kinrara, Puchong, fears that a video containing outdated information circulating online will thwart its efforts to resolve a dispute with a developer over handing over parts of its compound for an apartment project.

Soman Babu, a board member of SJK (T) Ladang Kinrara, said the video was posted last week by a web portal, and there have been several developments since April.

“When this video with old information was posted, many parties began commenting, posting videos, holding press conferences, and planning demonstrations,” he told FMT.

“Based on their press statement (last Friday), Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) appears to have been offended by the video. This could delay the resolution process further, or DBKL might not make a favourable decision.”

The press conferences mentioned by Soman include one tomorrow by the Save Kinrara Tamil School Action Team, a group not affiliated with the school board or its parent-teacher association (PIBG).

In DBKL’s statement, it said the land and mines department and the Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MBSJ) had been instructed to identify suitable areas to relocate parts of the school.

According to DBKL, the matters were decided at a meeting on June 7, which was chaired by federal territories minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa and attended by Batu MP P Prabakaran, Seputeh MP Teresa Kok, Kinrara assemblyman Ng Sze Han, and representatives from SJK (T) Ladang Kinrara, the Hindu temple, government agencies, and the relevant departments in DBKL.

In a separate statement today, the school board said only the PIBG and itself were the sole sources of accurate information on the dispute.

“Therefore, we request that all concerned parties refrain from issuing videos or statements to avoid any misunderstanding,” it said.

In March, FMT reported that SJK (T) Ladang Kinrara in Puchong refused to hand over part of its land to a developer unless it was compensated properly.

In a letter sighted by FMT, the developer requested SJK (T) Ladang Kinrara to hand over 3,000 sq ft of the school’s compound for the expansion of Jalan Mas in return for a compensation of RM50,000.

The road expansion would mean that several of the school’s buildings, including a kindergarten and canteen, would have to be demolished, thus affecting the 700 students enrolled at the school.

Parents, teachers and board members of the school held a town hall on March 24, where the chairman of the school’s board, Gobi Gurusamy, said they were shocked after receiving the developer’s letter on March 4 without any prior notification.
