NIBONG TEBAL:
Penang Pakatan Harapan chairman Chow Kon Yeow has conceded defeat in the Sungai Bakap by-election, saying the coalition failed to convince voters on national, state and local issues important to the electorate.

Chow said unofficial results indicated a clear victory for Perikatan Nasional candidate Abidin Ismail, with a larger majority than in the state assembly elections last year.

“As an early observation, I see these results as showing we have failed to convince the rakyat on national, state and local issues which the electorate thinks are important,” he told reporters at the PH campaign centre in Jawi.

Chow said PH would conduct a post-mortem to analyse the campaign’s weaknesses, strengths, and reasons for the decreased majority.

Unofficial results
Abidin Ismail (PN-PAS) 14,554 votes
Joohari Ariffin (PH-PKR) 10,285 votes
Majority: 4,269
Total electorate: 39,279
Estimated turnout: 69%
