PETALING JAYA:
National top men’s singles shuttler Lee Zii Jia is through to the last-16 of the 2024 Paris Olympics after a 21-10, 21-13 win against Spaniard Pablo Abian.

The first set was an evenly contested affair until Zii Jia opened a four-point lead at 12-8. Zii Jia extended his lead to 13-10 before going on an eight-point rally to close the set out.

Abian, 39, started the second set well and even led initially. However, the 26-year-old Zii Jia managed to claw back to tie the second set at 10-10 and again at 11-11. The Malaysian then took charge of the match and opened a seven-point cushion at 19-12 and went on to seal the win.

Abian is only the fourth badminton player to compete in five Olympics.

Zii Jia will next face either Indonesia’s Anthony Sinisuka Ginting or France’s Toma Junior Popov for a place in the quarter-finals.

The 2021 All England champion, Zii Jia started his campaign in the French capital with a 21-14, 21-12 win against Sri Lanka’s Viren Nettasinghe on Sunday. Abian defeated Viren 21-9, 21-19 yesterday.

Zii Jia made his Olympics debut in the last edition of the multisport tournament in Tokyo, where he fell to China’s Chen Long in the round of 16.

Earlier today, national women’s singles player Goh Jin Wei was knocked out of the Olympics by South Korea’s Kim Ga Eun in her final Group H match.

The 24-year-old, ranked 32nd in the world, went down 17-21, 22-20, 21-23 in 65 minutes.
