PETALING JAYA:
National badminton men’s doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik have again failed to make the Olympics final after losing to China’s Liang Wei Keng-Wang Chang in their semi-final match today.

Aaron-Wooi Yik, who won the bronze medal at the Tokyo Games in 2021, lost 19-21, 21-15, 17-21 to the world No. 1 pair.

The Malaysians will take part in the play-off for the bronze medal on Sunday, where they will face Kim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rasmussen of Denmark, who lost by 18-21, 21-17, 21-10 to defending Olympic champions Lee Yang-Wang Chi Lin of Taiwan this evening.

Earlier today, Malaysian women’s doubles shuttlers Pearly Tan-M Thinaah also suffered heartbreak when they were defeated in another three-game thriller by China’s world No. 1 Chen Qing Chen-Jia Yi Fan.

The men’s doubles quarter-final got off on a cautious note with both pairs making sure they did not give away easy points through unforced errors. Aaron-Wooi Yik were in a point-for-point exchange all the way until 19-19 before Wei Keng-Wang Chang won the game 21-19 in 18 minutes.

However, Aaron-Wooi Yik stormed back into the second game with power play, knowing this game would be a decider.

They were in complete control and made very few errors, keeping their shots low and smashing into their opponents to win 21-15 in 21 minutes, forcing a rubber to keep their hopes of an Olympic final alive.

Both pairs showed some renewed vigour in the third game, trying to kill off rallies with smashes. It was close all the way until the Chinese led 11-9 at the break.

The Chinese pair then took a commanding lead at 18-14 but Aaron-Wooi Yik clawed their way back to reduce the deficit to 17-18 with some tricky placements.

However, Wei Keng-Wang Chang lived up to their top billing by keeping calm to take the final three points and the game in 25 minutes.
