PETALING JAYA:
Barisan Nasional has reportedly taken an early lead in the by-election for the Nenggiri state assembly seat in Kelantan, according to unofficial returns reported by Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.

BN candidate Azmawi Fikri Abdul Ghani is believed to have secured 1,852 votes, far ahead of his rival, Perikatan Nasional candidate Rizwadi Ismail, who joined Bersatu from PAS recently.

In a Facebook post, Asyraf claimed that BN had secured victories in six polling districts that closed early, namely Tohoi, Sungai Puian, Sungai Jenera, Kuala Sungai, Pos Simpor and Sungai Wias.

He said BN has claimed a majority of 203 votes in Tohoi, 300 in Sungai Puian, 352 in Sungai Jenera, 49 in Kuala Sungai, 307 in Pos Simpor and 260 in Sungai Wias.

All PDMs except Kuala Sungai have a predominantly Orang Asli electorate.

The Nenggiri by-election has 20,216 registered voters, including 14 police officers, who cast their votes by post on Aug 13. The Election Commission had estimated that voter turnout would surpass 60%.

As of 4pm, the voter turnout for the Nenggiri by-election had exceeded 70%. All polling stations have closed at 6pm.

Twenty polling centres, with 48 channels, opened at 8am. Of these, 14 polling stations remained open until 6pm, while six others closed early.

The official vote-tallying centre is at Dewan Perdana in the Perdana Complex. The official results are expected to be announced by returning officer Nik Raisnan Daud at 9pm at the earliest.
