In a statement, the Royal Malaysian Navy said the ship capsized two nautical miles southeast of Tanjung Penyusop, Johor, at 3.54pm.
“Salvage operations are ongoing,” it said, adding that none of the 39 crew members who were rescued suffered any injuries in the incident.
“Navy assets are on site to monitor the situation and ensure security in the surrounding area. We advise the public against spreading inaccurate information regarding the incident,” it said.
Earlier, the navy said the leak was first detected in the ship’s engine room, with water rushing in and spreading uncontrollably throughout the vessel.
The crew’s efforts to stem the leak and stabilise the ship failed.
It had also said it will establish a special committee immediately to determine the cause of the incident.
