Perikatan Nasional chairman Muhyiddin Yassin said independence is expressed when the people can live in safety and prosperity and freely earn a living.

PETALING JAYA:
Independence will mean something greater when the people are free from poverty and are not burdened by the cost of living, says former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

In a statement to mark National Day tomorrow, Muhyiddin said he has been closely following the rise in living costs and its effect on the poor and low-income people.

“The government’s rationalisation of diesel subsidies has had a chain of effects, raising the costs of services and basic goods, which has deeply burdened this group,” he said.

Muhyiddin, who is also the chairman of Perikatan Nasional, said independence is expressed when the people can live in safety and prosperity and freely earn a living.

He said the rakyat have been able to live in harmony and tolerance due to their understanding of the Federal Constitution.

This has allowed the nation’s post-independence efforts to thrive, especially in driving the national economy, closing the economic gap between communities and territories and creating unity among the people, he said.

Muhyiddin also reminded the public to remember the deeds of past leaders and figures who fought for the nation’s independence.
