A school bus driver sparked controversy recently when he posted videos featuring children, some of whom he called his ‘crush’.

PETALING JAYA:
Using images of children on social media without their consent violates their privacy and can cause long-term psychological harm, says an advocacy group for children’s rights.

The organisation, Protect and Save the Children, said: “Non-consensual sharing of photos and videos not only impacts their self-perception but also teaches them that they lack control over their own images and narratives.”

The group said children have a right to privacy and protection from arbitrary interference with their personal lives, as stipulated by the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The convention also calls for the dignity of children to be upheld, it said and called on the public to speak out against inappropriate behaviour towards children.

Children should also be made to understand that they should not be shamed or penalised for saying no to adults, the group said.

The NGO’s statement came in the wake of a controversy over a school bus driver who posted images and videos of children on his social media account.

In some of the video posts on TikTok, the driver would call the children his “crush” or “beloved” in the captions to the videos, while the children’s faces were clearly visible. His videos have garnered 10.5 million likes to date.

The 24-year old man has been arrested.
