PETALING JAYA:
An Umno Supreme Council member has advised the opposition against fielding a candidate in the coming Mahkota by-election after Annuar Musa of PAS predicted a landslide victory there for Barisan Nasional.

Puad Zarkashi said Annuar should persuade Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin to avoid fielding a candidate for the Johor state assembly seat.

Annuar, a former BN secretary-general who is now the PAS deputy election chief, had predicted earlier today that BN’s majority would definitely be more than 20,000 votes in the Mahkota by-election on Sept 28.

In response, Puad wrote in a Facebook post: “I wonder if that is an admission of defeat or is he taking a swipe at Bersatu?”

PAS and Bersatu are coalition partners in Perikatan Nasional. Puad said if PN were to skip the by-election, it could help save taxpayers’ money and reduce “slander, empty promises and insults to the royal institution”.

Annuar had said BN would be able to secure more than 30,000 votes, based on the 2022 election, when BN and Pakatan Harapan (then rivals) secured a combined total of more than 20,000 votes against the 7,614 votes for PN.

The seat was won by Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain (BN-Umno) with a 5,166-vote majority over Taqiuddin Cheman (PH-Amanah). She died on Aug 2, which triggered the by-election.

Puad trolls Bersatu as successor to Umno

In a separate post earlier, Puad taunted Bersatu by suggesting that it could prove itself as a successor to Umno by fielding its own candidate and not one borrowed from PAS.

He said that PAS would not dare loan a member to Bersatu following a crushing defeat in the Nenggiri by-election in Kelantan last month when Bersatu fielded a former PAS member who had switched parties.

Puad said PN might suffer a bigger defeat if a PAS member was loaned to Bersatu as a candidate in Mahkota. “This will be Bersatu’s chance to prove if it could be Umno’s successor,” Puad wrote.
