PETALING JAYA:
Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) chairman Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki has backed deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s call for the UPSR examination for Year 6 students to be reintroduced.

Asyraf said he strongly agreed with the proposal as there was a need for a more streamlined and centralised evaluation system to measure the academic level of students before they enter secondary school.

“It is important for any form of (educational) intervention to be carried out before they are at a later stage,” he said.

Mara currently has junior science colleges (MRSM) but Zahid had proposed last month that it establish its own primary schools to complete its education ecosystem.

Yesterday, Zahid said the government’s education policies should be reviewed, particularly citing the absence of major examinations for Year 6 and Form 3 students.

He said the scrapped UPSR and PT3 examinations had served as benchmarks to gauge the education levels of students before they sit for the SPM examination and choose the fields they would like to pursue when furthering their studies.

In April 2021, the education ministry announced the abolition of UPSR and the cancellation of the PT3 examination for that year. The PT3 examination was abolished in June 2022.

In March last year, education minister Fadhlina Sidek said the ministry did not plan to revive the examinations. However, earlier today, Fadhlina said the Cabinet would discuss Zahid’s proposal.
