Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal called for a bill for constituency development funds to be tabled at the next Dewan Rakyat session.

PETALING JAYA:
The decision by Perikatan Nasional MPs to unanimously reject the memorandum of understanding on development funds will not adversely affect the opposition coalition, says Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal.

Speaking on a programme hosted by Astro Awani, the PN deputy youth chief said it was not the “end of the world” for PN MPs if they did not receive any allocations, adding that it may even work in their favour ahead of the next general election.

“But I request the government to specify how much has been allocated from the ICU (implementation coordination unit of the Prime Minister’s Department), for example, to parties in my parliamentary constituency,” he said.

“This will allow people in Machang to know which NGOs or village heads have received the allocations that I was supposed to get.

“We can move on. But for the sake of my constituents, I need to explain to them that the allocations has been channelled through other parties.”

Wan Fayhsal also urged for a bill for constituency development funds to be tabled at the next Dewan Rakyat session.

On Sunday, opposition leader Hamzah Zainudin announced that PN had unanimously rejected the draft MoU, claiming it went against the Federal Constitution.

Hamzah said the draft violated the constitution by including conditions that touched on the special position of the Malays and Bumiputeras, and stipulations that allegedly “went against traditional, cultural and moral values”.

On Tuesday, PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin singled out a clause that purportedly prohibits discussing issues related to race, religion and royalty (3Rs).

He said it was aimed at restricting the opposition MPs’ freedom to voice their constituents’ concerns, especially on such issues.

Today, Bernama reported that deputy prime minister Fadillah Yusof said the opposition can submit new proposals or provide feedback regarding the draft MoU, adding that the existing draft can serve as a basis for these discussions.

“The existing MoU draft is the foundation for us to continue discussions. If the opposition wants a new MoU, they need to provide feedback.

“But they have already made a statement rejecting it, so we accept their stance,” he told reporters after the opening ceremony of the International Social Security Management Conference 2024 in Kuching.
