PETALING JAYA:
National shuttlers Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani captured their first title as professionals when they won the 2024 China Open men’s doubles title today.

The world No 12 lost the first game 13-21 before beating China’s world No 7 He Ji Ting-Ren Xiang Yu 21-12 in the second game.

The Malaysian pair emerged victorious after winning the rubber game 21-17. The match lasted 58 minutes.

This win is also significant for the newly-turned professionals as it is their first in a BWF Super 1000 series. Last month, the duo captured the Japan Open title which was their first victory in a Super 750 event.

Goh-Izzuddin won prize money of US$148,000 (RM622,361) while the Chinese pair took home US$70,000.

The Malaysian pair had to come from behind to achieve victory. They trailed their opponents all the way in the first game, with Ji Ting-Xiang Yu setting a fast pace, deploying powerful and accurate smashes.

Buoyed by vociferous home crowd support, they won the first game with relative ease at 21-13.

Goh-Izzuddin showed they were not cowed by the vocal Chinese supporters and took an early 3-0 lead in the second game. They then unleashed their trademark low cross-court returns that often frustrated the opponents.

They went on to lead 11-7 at the break in just 10 minutes with accurate net play. They won the game easily at 21-12.

The rubber game saw many fierce exchanges with both pairs using their power to win points. Goh-Izzuddin changed their tactics by sending the shuttle to the baseline, forcing the Chinese pair to smash often.

But the Malaysians returned most of the shots with accurate placements, catching the Chinese pair often to win 21-17.
