PETALING JAYA:
The tourism, arts and culture ministry has advised the public to carefully read the terms and conditions before making hotel bookings following a complaint of irregular check-in and check-out times.

“This step is crucial to avoid any misunderstanding or dissatisfaction, particularly regarding pricing and the services provided,” it said in a statement.

The ministry also said it was monitoring and paying ttention to the relevant hoteliers to provide an explanation regarding the matter.

Yesterday, FMT reported that the Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (Fomca) had called for standardised check-in and check-out times at hotels.

This follows a post on X, in which a netizen complained about a hotel’s policy of setting check-ins at 4pm and check-outs at 11am.

Fomca deputy secretary-general Nur Asyikin Aminuddin said changing check-in and check-out times, which results in shorter stays, was unfair to guests.

She said hotels should stick to the common practice of check-ins at 3pm and check-outs at noon.

However, hotel operators contacted by FMT said they were free to determine their check-in and check-out times based on operational needs and other factors such as occupancy rates, room inventory, and staffing.

Malaysian Association of Hotels vice-chairman Khoo Boo Lim also said check-in and check-out times were set to ensure rooms were ready for incoming guests.
