The 20 polling centres in the Johor state constituency are set to close at 6pm.
The total turnout in the constituency during the March 2022 state polls was 57.34%.
There are a total of 66,318 eligible voters in Mahkota for this by-election.
Of this number, 4,437 voters comprise military and police personnel, and their spouses, who participated in the early voting held last Tuesday.
The by-election was called following the death of Umno assemblyman Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain on Aug 2.
Sharifah won the Mahkota seat for Barisan Nasional (BN) in the 2022 Johor state polls. She defeated the candidate from Pakatan Harapan (PH) with a 5,166-vote majority in a four-cornered fight, which included candidates from Perikatan Nasional (PN) and Warisan.

Today’s by-election is a straight fight between BN’s Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah and PN’s Haizan Jaafar. Both candidates are registered voters in the constituency and have also cast their ballots.
Bernama reported EC chairman Ramlan Harun as saying that the election results are expected to be announced as early as 9pm.
He also projected a voter turnout of over 60%, surpassing the 57% turnout recorded in the last election.
