Social welfare department figures showed that the number of flood evacuees rose from 451 people at 8am today to 765 at 4pm, particularly in Pokok Sena and Kubang Pasu.
More than 8,000 people in Kedah were evacuated to relief centres in the past week. The situation appeared to ease with evacuees dwindling to under a thousand, but the floods returned over the past two days.
Kampung Derang resident Shamsul Tajuddin, 44, said he had just finished cleaning and tidying his home four days ago after floods struck his village on Sept 18, Bernama reported.
“After the flood receded, my wife and I cleaned the house, but we didn’t have time to rearrange the furniture.
“I didn’t expect that the water would rise again today for the second time in a week. We haven’t even had time to recover from the previous flood, and now it’s happening again,” he was quoted as saying at the SK Bukit Hijau relief centre.
Similarly, 72-year-old Ismail Mahmud said he had just returned to his Kampung Bukit home after spending several days at a relief centre, but had to be evacuated again today after his house was inundated with floodwaters.
“I just returned home and finished cleaning the house and furniture, but today I had to move back to the evacuation centre.”
Meanwhile, Zahari Ramli, 56, said he decided to relocate to a relief centre even though the flood in his village was not so severe. “I didn’t want to take the risk because my wife is also unwell. It would be difficult if there was an emergency.”
