KUANTAN:
A weekend outing for a group of University College of Yayasan Pahang students at the Pasir Puteri picnic area at Sungai Lembing ended in tragedy when one of them drowned.

Kuantan police chief Wan Zahari Wan Busu said the victim, Amirul Fahmie Saiful, 18, was with five friends — two boys and three girls — at the picnic area at around 8.30am after hiking up Bukit Panorama.

The river’s strong currents had swept away two of the girls, prompting Amirul to rescue them. “Both the girls were safely pulled to shore with help from another boy, but when they turned back for Amirul, he had disappeared.”

A search and rescue operation was launched, and after an hour, Amirul was found unconscious at a depth of 1.5m. He was pronounced dead at 12.20pm.
