Bersatu’s Hilman Idham said the call for the party’s members to join PKR did not make sense as it was Umno candidates who had won the Nenggiri and Mahkota by-elections.

PETALING JAYA:
Bersatu’s Hilman Idham has described as “nonsensical” a call for the party’s members to join PKR following the opposition’s consecutive defeats in two by-elections.

The former PKR Youth deputy chief said the invitation by a former Bersatu-turned-PKR member, Faiz Na’aman, for Bersatu members to jump ship did not make sense as it was Umno candidates who had won the Nenggiri and Mahkota by-elections.

“Umno won, so why join PKR? PKR also lost in the Sungai Bakap by-election,” the Gombak Setia assemblyman told FMT.

On Sunday, Faiz invited Bersatu members and leaders to join PKR following the party’s heavy defeats in the Mahkota and Nenggiri by-elections, which he added was an indication that Malay voters were rejecting Muhyiddin Yassin’s party.

Barisan Nasional’s candidate Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah of Umno was elected as Mahkota’s new assemblyman last Saturday after defeating Perikatan Nasional’s Haizan Jaafar by a majority of 20,648 votes.

It was the second straight loss for PN in a by-election after BN reclaimed the Nenggiri state seat in Kelantan with a commanding 3,352-vote majority in August.

Hilman went on to caution Faiz, who joined PKR last March, against being overly excited about being in the ruling party.

“There’s no guarantee they will remain in power forever.”

Hilman, who left PKR in 2020, also said that BN might not necessarily join forces with Pakatan Harapan after the next general election.

BN and PH formed the unity government after the last nationwide polls led to a hung Parliament.
