PETALING JAYA:
Sarawak DAP, which had opposed a purported inheritance tax, has welcomed an announcement by secretary-general Loke Siew Fook that the Cabinet had never discussed such a tax.

Sarawak DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen said Loke’s announcement will put to rest speculative reports on the tax. Loke had said earlier today that reports of the tax were assumptions by analysts.

An inheritance tax was believed to be among five new taxes proposed for the 2025 federal budget to be tabled this month. It would be levied on the assets or wealth inherited by beneficiaries after one’s death.

Chong said speculative reports on the tax had sparked “grave concern” among the local communities.

He said that Loke’s statement over the matter highlighted the role of Sarawak DAP in the current federal government. He said Sarawak DAP would continue to be the voice of the people and leverage its wider national platform “to shape the government’s policy while continuing to better serve the interest of the people.”

Earlier this month, Chong, who is the Stampin MP, said the DAP’s five MPs from Sarawak would vote against the proposed tax if it was tabled in the Dewan Rakyat.
