Wisma Putra said it had passed on the information to the relevant authorities for confirmation and urged the public against speculating on the matter.
“For now, we are unable to confirm the authenticity of the information,” it said in a statement.
It added that the safety of Malaysians abroad was the responsibility of the individuals themselves although the ministry was prepared to offer consular assistance to those in need.
This comes after the MyKad and driver’s licence of a 20-year-old Malaysian from Perlis was purportedly found in Levadne, Zaporizhia, after Russian forces captured a Ukrainian stronghold, according to claims on social media.
The purported IDs were said to be among the “trophies” taken by Russian forces.
In January, a report by Ukrainian military stated that Malaysians were allegedly among those serving as mercenaries alongside Russians in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region.
The report said mercenaries from Malaysia, accompanied by a translator, were spotted in Donetsk – large areas of which had been under the control of Russian forces and their proxies since 2014.
The home ministry and police later said they did not have any information on the matter, even after further investigation with the aid of their European counterparts.
