Unemployment in M’sia on a downward trend, says statistics dept

Chief statistician Uzir Mahidin said the labour force continued to expand in September to register 17.24 million persons, compared to the 17.22 million recorded in August.

The statistics department revealed that the number of unemployed persons has declined to 555,300 for September compared to 558,500 the previous month, showing a 0.6% drop.

In a statement, chief statistician Uzir Mahidin said the unemployment rate for September stood at 3.2%, the same as in August.

“Following the country’s encouraging economic performance, the country’s labour market position in September remained strong.

“This was illustrated by the increasing number of employed persons, while the number of unemployed persons is declining,” he said.

Uzir also said the labour force continued to expand in September, registering 17.24 million persons, compared to the 17.22 million recorded in August.

“Accordingly, a higher labour force participation rate (LFPR) was recorded at 70.5%, rising by 0.1% compared to the previous month,” he added.

The number of employed people, which was concentrated in the services sector, continued to record increases, particularly in food and beverage services, wholesale and retail trade, as well as information and communications activities.

The manufacturing, construction, mining and quarrying and agriculture sectors also registered a rise in employment.

As for the overall performance for the third quarter of 2024, Uzir said the labour force showed a positive trend, increasing by 0.7% quarter on quarter to 17.26 million compared to 17.15 million in the second quarter.

“The LFPR remained at 70.5% as in the previous quarter. In addition, the number of employed persons increased by 0.7% to 16.72 million persons compared to 16.59 million in the second quarter,” he said.

Meanwhile, the number of unemployed persons reduced by 1.8% to 547,900 persons in the third quarter, recording a 3.2% unemployment rate in the third quarter of 2024 as compared to 3.3% in the previous quarter.

Uzir said that 75.1% of the total workers were from the employees category, with a 0.1% increase from last month to 12.51 million persons. Own-account workers showed an upward trend with an addition of 0.3% to 3.09 million people compared to August.

As for the unemployment rate among youths, aged 15 to 24, the department saw a 0.1% increase to 10.5% with 304,200 people in September compared to August.

In terms of the unemployment situation by state, the lowest unemployment rates in the third quarter were recorded in Kedah with 1.6%, followed by Selangor (1.9%), Penang (2%) and Putrajaya (2%).
