Kuala Lumpur police chief Rusdi Isa said the four Vietnamese nationals were killed in an exchange of gunfire during a raid on a 17th floor unit of a condominium block on Jalan Imbi, Kuala Lumpur, at about 11.30pm.
“The men opened fire at the officers, leading to an exchange of gunfire. In self-defence, police managed to shoot and kill all four,” Rusdi was quoted by Utusan Malaysia as saying.
He said the men, in their 40s, had two firearms and two machetes
Rusdi said the gang was believed to have travelled regularly in and out of the country and had accumulated RM4.3 million through their criminal activities.
“We believe they used the luxury condo unit as a base to plan their activities and to rest and hide,” he said.
He said the gang was suspected of breaking into homes and offices, targeting safes, in selected locations. They would look for empty offices or homes before striking.
They operated at night, leaving little trace, and managed to avoid being caught on CCTV.
“The latest reported crime was two days ago in Sri Hartamas,” he said.
Rusdi said police are tracking down the remaining members of the gang.
