PETALING JAYA:
Surprise Malaysian semi-finalists Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin notched another upset in the China Masters today by defeating world No 7 Wang Chun Man-Tse Ying Suet to march into the mixed doubles final.

The world No 23 defeated Chun Man-Ying Suet 21-I4, 17-21, 21-19 in a match that lasted 65 minutes. It was the second time that the pair have defeated their Hong Kong rivals in two encounters.

Pang Ron-Su Yin had ousted China’s world No 3 Jiang Zhen Bang-Wei Ya Xin in straight games in the second round to qualify for the quarter-finals.

Yesterday, they beat Taiwan’s Chen Cheng Kuan-His Yin Hui, also in straight games, to enter the semi-finals

However, a tough final awaits the Malaysians as they will play Chinese top seeds Feng Yan Zhe-Huang Dong Ping, who ousted Malaysia’s Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei in the other semi-final this morning.

While the Hong Kong pair have already qualified for the prestigious BWF World Tour Finals to be played in Hangzhou, China, next month, Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin only have a mathematical chance of making it.

On paper, they will qualify for the Tour Finals if they go on to win the final tomorrow, which will earn them 11,000 points and bring their total to 69,480. This will leapfrog them from No 16 to the eighth spot in the Tour Finals standings, currently occupied by a South Korean pair.

The Tour Finals offers US$2.5 million in total prize money, including US$210,000 (RM937,500) for the doubles winners in all three categories, and also substantial points for the final rankings.

National men’s singles player Lee Zii Jia has already qualified for the event, marking his return to the prestigious tournament after a two-year absence.

Doubles shuttlers Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani as well as mixed doubles pair Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai and women’s doubles pair Pearly Tan-M Thinaah have also booked their places in Hangzhou.

Aaron-Wooi Yik’s participation had been in doubt, but according to Bernama, BWF said in a post on X today that they, together with Indonesia’s Sabar Karyaman Gutama-Moh Reza Pahlevi Isfahani, claimed the final two slots in the men’s doubles category.

Only the top eight players and pairs in the Tour Finals qualifiers list will make it to the event. There is also a cap of two representatives from each country per category.

The gold medallists at the 2024 Paris Olympics automatically qualify for the tournament, even if they are not in the top eight.
