Deputy inspector-general of police Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said the probe would be carried out under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, according to Harian Metro.
“The section provides a penalty of up to RM50,000 in fines or imprisonment for a year, or both (upon conviction).
“At the moment, we will focus on flood relief efforts. After that, we will start the investigations,” he said.
The media recently reported that Pasir Mas police had received 114 fake calls related to the flood during the first wave.
Kelantan police chief Yusoff Mamat said when personnel were mobilised to the location stated in the report, they found that the houses did not exist.
Ayob Khan said such false calls were also received in other states affected by the floods.
He such hoax calls disrupted the work of rescue teams and action against these irresponsible parties will serve as a lesson to them and others.
