Selangor PKR says it does not need Tengku Zafrul Aziz to replace Amirudin Shari.

PETALING JAYA:
Amirudin Shari has performed his duties well as Selangor PKR chief and does not need to be replaced, his vice-chairman RG Gunaraj said following talk of Tengku Zafrul Aziz’s potential switch to the party.

Gunaraj said that Amirudin’s leadership, including in his role as Selangor menteri besar, was still crucial for governing the state.

“PKR in Selangor does not need a replacement for Amirudin at this time. His leadership is needed, and he has a strong track record,” he told FMT.

On Sunday, Umno vice-president Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail said that attempts to lure members of his party to join others in the unity government should be avoided, as it could lead to division.

He said that Umno, having been severely impacted by party-hopping, was now aware of the negative consequences of such actions.

Gunaraj however said that Wan Rosdy’s remarks were unfounded as PKR had never invited anyone to join the party. He also urged Tengku Zafrul to clarify whether he was still with Umno.

“Tengku Zafrul needs to leave his party before he can negotiate with any other party. As of now, there’s nothing happening with PKR,” said the Sentosa assemblyman.

Meanwhile, Selangor PKR Youth chief Izuan Ahmad Kasim said that members of the unity government who wished to join his party should first discuss it with their party leadership to prevent friction.

“There are various opinions regarding this issue, with some accepting it and others not,” he said.

“However, there’s no red carpet for any leader to join PKR. They must show sincerity and a reform agenda, and God willing, members will accept them.”

Last week, FMT cited a source in Selangor Umno as saying that intense negotiations were underway over the possibility of Tengku Zafrul leaving Umno for PKR.

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said he had not received any official notification from Tengku Zafrul, who is a Supreme Council member, about his plans to leave the party for PKR.

PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, however, confirmed that preliminary discussions on the matter had taken place.

On Sunday, Tengku Zafrul acknowledged having discussions with PKR to join the party, but said he had yet to decide on the matter.

He also said that the discussions had not centred on positions at the state level, or on by-elections.
