He said attendance at the rally would also be in line with the party’s principles of upholding the constitution.
“I see no issues if Bersatu leaders and members were to be present (at the rally) outside the Palace of Justice on Jan 6,” he said in a statement. However, he said the Bersatu Supreme Council has yet to officially discuss the matter.
Earlier today, Wanita Bersatu chief Mas Ermieyati Samsudin said the party will not prevent members from taking part in the rally. She said several Bersatu leaders are expected to be present, and said she might be there too.
Bersatu was co-founded by Muhyiddin Yassin after he was sacked as Umno deputy president in 2016, and he has been harshly critical of Najib, then Umno president and prime minister, particularly over the 1MDB scandal.
Najib is currently serving a six-year prison sentence, halved by the pardons board from the initial 12 years, following his conviction in the SRC International case.
The rally is being held on the day the Court of Appeal will hear Najib’s application for leave to adduce fresh evidence in his appeal to serve the remainder of his jail term under house arrest, which he claims was issued in a supplementary decree to the Feb 2 announcement.
Yesterday PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan urged party members to attend the rally and send a “clear signal to the government” about the importance of upholding the rule of law.
Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi praised PAS for organising the rally and urged other political parties, particularly Pakatan Harapan, to also take part.
