PETALING JAYA:
Selangor police have suspended permits for concerts in the state following the death of four revellers at the Pinkfish New Year’s Eve countdown.

Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan said the suspension of the permits would take effect immediately, Sinar Harian reported.

Hussein said that in future, organisers need to assure the authorities that they would be able to prevent drugs from being smuggled into the concert venues.

“If this requirement cannot be adhered to, we will not allow the concert to go on,” he was quoted as saying.

The four who died at the event at Sunway Lagoon on Dec 31 were suspected to have taken ecstasy, although investigators are still waiting for the toxicology analysis report for confirmation.

Earlier, Hussein said police believed the drugs were “brought in or bought” at the event.

He said police might also look at three aspects before giving concert organisers the go-ahead, namely, if the size of the venue can accommodate the number of attendees, the safety aspects, and ventilation.

He said the Pinkfish countdown event was attended by 14,000 people, which was “huge”.

Hussein said the death of the four may have been contributed by several factors, including the huge crowd and the consumption of banned substances.

Pinkfish’s management had previously said the four had died outside the event’s premises.

The event organiser said the safety of attendees and other stakeholders had always been their highest priority in holding the concert.

It said it had taken precautionary measures, including having more than 100 policemen present as well as security personnel and K9 units at entry points.
