Muhyiddin, who is also Bersatu president, emphasised that every statement must be carefully made based on facts, especially in the context of Malaysia’s diverse society.
He was asked if leaders of the parties in the coalition should be given a “gag order” after Perak PAS chief Razman Zakaria recently linked DAP’s Hannah Yeoh to the Yeoh family of the YTL Corporation Bhd conglomerate.
Muhyiddin said no such directive was necessary, but he expected party leaders to ensure they checked their facts.
“I am not taking sides. Furthermore, in this Chinese New Year season, we have to emphasise national unity and better understanding among the different races in Malaysia.
“This country is for all Malaysians and as its citizens, we should respect each other,” he told reporters on the sidelines of Gerakan’s Chinese New Year celebrations at Menara PGRM here today.
Razman yesterday apologised for his factual error regarding his remarks on the youth and sports minister, saying it was a slip of the tongue.
Razman also expressed his disappointment over the coverage of his speech, saying the media had deliberately focused on the 10-second part of his speech referencing Yeoh without reporting on the other parts or broader issues.
Yeoh has since chided Razman, the Gunong Semanggol assemblyman, for claiming that she was the “daughter of a rich man” and a “daughter of YTL”.
Despite Razman’s apology, Yeoh said she would proceed to send him a letter of demand because the PAS leader had made other allegedly defamatory allegations against her in the same speech.
